Howard Garns and Number Place
Sudoku was invented in Indianapolis in 1979 by a retired architect named Howard Garns. He never knew it would reach a billion players. The small history nobody tells.
Sudoku was invented by a retired architect from Indianapolis named Howard Garns. He was 73 when the first one was published, in May 1979, in a magazine called Dell Pencil Puzzles & Word Games. The puzzle was called "Number Place" and it appeared without his name attached. Garns died eight years later, in 1989, without ever learning that his invention would become a global obsession.
That is the small history that everyone repeats and almost nobody unpacks. Here is what is worth knowing about the man and the moment.
Why "Number Place"
Garns was a constructor of crosswords and logic puzzles, and he designed Number Place as a Latin-square variant with the added three-by-three box constraint. The name came from the literal instruction: place the numbers. There was no marketing intent in the title.
The puzzle ran in Dell magazines through the 1980s with little fanfare. It was popular enough to keep its slot but never breakthrough. Dell paid Garns a few hundred dollars per puzzle, a retired man's hobby income, and the puzzles continued to appear for years after his death.
The Japanese rediscovery
Maki Kaji of Nikoli magazine in Tokyo discovered Number Place in the early 1980s. He liked the elegance of the rules and the absence of arithmetic. Nikoli began running the puzzle in 1984 and renamed it "sudoku" in 1986, a contraction of "sūji wa dokushin ni kagiru" — the digits are limited to one occurrence. The new name was clean, Japanese, and stuck.
Number Place died in America even as sudoku thrived in Japan. Dell continued to publish Number Place but never marketed it beyond the puzzle-magazine niche. By the time Wayne Gould rediscovered the puzzle in a Tokyo bookshop in 1997, the American version had been almost forgotten in its birthplace.

What Garns added to Latin squares
The basic structure of Number Place is a Latin square, an object Leonhard Euler studied in 1782. A Latin square is a grid where every row and column contains each symbol exactly once. The three-by-three box constraint, which makes sudoku a sudoku, was Garns's contribution.
That extra constraint sounds small. Mathematically it is large. It rules out many otherwise-valid Latin squares, which is what makes a single sudoku solvable by deduction rather than by trial. Without the box constraint, the puzzle is too loose; without the rows and columns, it is too tight. Garns's instinct for the right amount of structure is the reason sudoku works at all.
What he did not live to see
Garns never knew his puzzle would reach a billion players. He never heard the word "sudoku". He never saw the puzzle running next to the crossword in The Times of London. He died in 1989, when Number Place was still a small Dell feature with a house byline.
The credit was restored slowly. Dell acknowledged him in the late 2000s. Most major newspaper coverage of sudoku now mentions him. The Indianapolis Star ran a profile in 2007 that surfaced photos of him at his drafting table. It took two decades and one Japanese name change for the man who invented the puzzle to be named in the credits.
The kind of person who invents a puzzle
Retired. Patient. Mathematically inclined without being a mathematician. Comfortable with constraint as a creative tool. The same kind of person who builds model trains or designs garden layouts. Garns is not a celebrity inventor, and he would have hated being one. The puzzle is the lasting thing. That is how Garns would have wanted it.
